Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

The National Curriculum forms the basis of our programme of studies for pupils from Nursery through to Year 6. Pupils in Years 7 - 8 follow the Common Entrance (13+ exam) syllabus. While using the National Curriculum enables us to make the best use of national expertise, our independence, high staff-to-pupil ratio, and range of subject specialist teachers, afford us the flexibility to extend our pupils beyond the nationally set boundaries.

At the beginning of each term, parents will receive a curriculum document which sets out the topics for each subject area for their child's year group. Progress will be monitored against the learning objectives as described.

Examinations and assessment: Assessing pupil progress is an important adjunct to the delivery of the curriculum, because it provides a snapshot of each pupil's progress at different stages in his or her development. Not only is the gleaned information important to parents as well as to the pupils themselves, but it also allows us to track individual progress, ensuring that each child is being appropriately supported or extended.

Class teachers: Children from Nursery through to Year 4 are predominantly taught by their class teacher. In Reception and Years 1 - 2 they are supported by a qualified, full-time classroom assistant. Pupils from Year 5 - 8 have a form tutor who is responsible for their pastoral care.

Subject specialist teachers: Subject specialist teachers are used to teach CDT, ICT, Music, and French from reception through the school. Pupils in Years 5 - 8 benefit from receiving all their tuition from teachers who have specific expertise in their area of study. Moreover, our subject specialists provide invaluable assistance and guidance to class teachers in the lower years.
