French is taught across the age range at Hendon Preparatory School, from Reception to Year 8.

Junior - Year 3 pupils have a 40-minute session per week. This is extended to 1 hour per week in Year 4 and 1 hour and 40 minutes in Years 5-8. 

Although French is examined as part of Common Entrance at 13+ and our boys are prepared accordingly, it is not generally examined as part of 11+.

The department aims to do the following:

• Provide an enjoyable and stimulating language learning experience which draws in pupils of all ability levels
• Develop the pupil's ability to use French effectively both within the classroom and for the purposes of practical communication
• Foster the interest and skills required for further successful language learning in the future
• Promote multicultural awareness through the experience of French culture and ways of life
• Promote a range of learning styles, including collaborative work with peers and independent learning
