More about the Geography Department
We make the most of our proximity to the world-class centres of learning in Central London. For example, when studying plate tectonics, Year 7 pupils visit the Natural History Museum. The British Library and its maps curator provide an invaluable source of information at all levels. We take part in inter-school initiatives such as the Ordnance Survey's Maps for Schools programme. Our own school community is a wonderful resource in itself, with so many of us - pupils, parents and staff - offering a wide range of expertise and life experience from diverse backgrounds.
Although formally examined within school from Year 3, geography is not generally included in the 11+ examinations for entry into senior schools. It is, however, examinable as part of Common Entrance 13+. Unlike other subjects, however the geography assessment includes a field work project, exemplifying the importance of individual work, which makes up 20 % of the overall mark.
Geography provides an opportunity for pupils with strengths across a broad range of subject-areas to apply their skills. Producing maps and diagrams allows those with an artistic bent to shine, whilst the mathematicians enjoy tabulating information. Working on independent projects aids in the development of clear thinking and succinct reporting, as well as providing the opportunity to apply IT skills.
