More about the Maths Department
The curriculum encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own learning. The focus is on 'knowing how' as well as 'knowing what' to learn. From the very early years, pupils practise applying calculation skills, and the understanding of number, to real-life situations.
Mathematics can also play a part in honing communication skills, through the participation in group problem-solving activities and the articulation of abstract concepts. It is particularly useful as a means of entry to learning for our overseas/foreign language students, as numbers can be worked in any language. In our unique and multicultural school "maths is the truly global language. With it we convey ideas to each other that words cannot handle." (Alison Wolf, Visiting Professorial Fellow, Institute of Education, University of London)
