More about our Head teacher

Ms Jane Anderson became Head teacher of Hendon Preparatory School on 1st April 2008, having been Deputy since September 2006. Even before then she was a familiar face at the school, having been appointed as Head of Mathematics in January 2004.

Ms Anderson was born Miss Jane Elton in Westminster, London in 1955. She was educated at Rickmansworth Grammar School and at Bedford College, University of London, which has now become The Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. Jane studied Geography and Geology, graduating with an Upper Second Class Honours Bachelor of Science degree. Whilst at University, she won a scholarship funded by Rio Tinto Zinc and the Department of Trade to research copper indicator plants in the Mary Kathleen region of Queensland Australia, working with NASA landsat imagery in its first days. She left University to join the Metropolitan Police in 1976 - much to her parents' consternation!

Early promotion saw her posted from Whetstone Police to Kings Cross Road Police Station as a young Sergeant in 1980. Serving nearly 10 years and many interesting events later, she then left to begin a family of her own. She has three adult sons and is now a grandparent.

With a change of personal circumstances, Jane returned to study and gained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education with the Open University while also working part-time. The Open University invited her to join their Assessment and Advisory Group on which she served for 4 years. Working for the London Diocesan Board for Schools and working within the London Borough of Barnet for the most part, Jane gained experience and promotion within primary education before arriving at Hendon Preparatory School.

Jane has continued with her professional development, and has achieved a Masters in Educational Leadership (MEd) at Buckingham University, under Professor Woodhead's tutelage.

Until her mid forties, Jane was also an active judoka, coaching young people in this martial art to Green Belt. Relaxation time is a little less frenetic these days, always a keen swimmer she still puts in lengths 3 times a week and continues to enjoy geology, promoting interest in rocks at school fetes!
