Music Department

Head of Department: Miss Suzanne Asirwatham

The Music Department at Hendon Preparatory School has three broad aims:

1. The syllabus

The syllabus provides pupils with the opportunity to explore a wide range of musical styles, as well as teaching them to read and write music. Creativity is fostered as pupils produce their own pieces using a variety of different instruments. Pupils in the Junior School have two lessons per week with a focus on exploring percussion instruments and group singing. From Year 3 they learn the recorder and form the school choir. In Years 5 and 6 they move on to using keyboards.

2. Performance experience

We aim to provide a wide range of different performance opportunities. These include concerts, assemblies and other important school occasions. Pupils benefit greatly from the challenge of performing publicly as soloists, in small groups, and as members of their class.  Auditions are held before each event, allowing all our musicians the opportunity of being considered as soloists. Parents and other guests are always invited to our regular events.
