On Monday 23rd November 2012, Year 5 and 6 pupils attended one of the Royal Institution lectures. The subject was “Forces”. The lecture was held in the world famous Faraday Theatre – which recently featured on the rear of British 20 Pound notes. A very impressive room! The Theatre has been in continuous use as a science demonstration venue for over 200 years.
The children enjoyed the interactive demonstrations and colourful examples of Physics in action. After lunch we were able to examine real historical scientific artefacts in the Institutions’ own extensive museum. These included the earliest electro-magnets, made and demonstrated by Faraday himself, as well as the worlds’ first Cathode Ray Tube – the precursor to modern television and radar, and many other strange looking “old world” technologies which were revolutionary in their days.
