Progression

English progression throughout the school

Pupils develop language skills on a daily basis and become active communicators from a very young age. They explore and experiment with sounds, words and texts, have the confidence to initiate conversations and are able respond to what they have heard by asking relevant answers.

From the age of 5 pupils are able to write simples sentences in joined handwriting and to use capital letters and full stops correctly.

As pupils move up the school they continue to develop their understanding of the English language through a wide range of creative and inspiring activities.

From Year 5 we begin to prepare our girls for their 11+ entry examinations into their chosen senior schools, whilst the boys are prepared for their Year 8 Common Entrance examinations. We explore a wide range of Literary styles, study the language techniques used and discuss the traits of classic authors and poets such as: Ted Hughes, Lord Tennyson, Alfred Noyles, John Keats and William Shakespeare. Pupils are given the opportunity to write their own prose and poetic verse using the techniques learned.
