Reception
The child-centred approach instigated in nursery is carried through into Reception. The class teacher is assisted by a full-time classroom assistant. Although structured, teacher-led activities are introduced, child-led initiatives continue, building on pre-existing interests and stimulating enthusiasm and a desire to engage.
Free access to sand, water, craft and modelling materials, construction toys, books, and games and puzzles continues to kindle creative thought and autonomous investigation. The range of ability amongst the children will continue to be quite broad at this stage. A high level of differentiation is used across the curriculum to ensure that all pupils are being appropriately challenged.
Short but engaging teacher-led literacy activities are centred on the Ruth Miskin Phonics Scheme which continues on into Years 1 and 2. Children begin to take simple reading books home to enjoy with their parents. Fine motor coordination activities strengthen and refine hand movement as a precursor to writing.
