Teaching Standards

Inspirational Teaching

Topics are brought to life through inspirational teaching and extensive extra-curricular and co-curricular programmes. Whether it is a themed day, a visit or a workshop, physical experiences, and immersive learning help to fire the imagination and add an extra dimension to classroom-based learning.

Our small class sizes enable us to work with students as individuals, following their interests and their well-being. We see the breadth and depth of student achievements not only in academic results, but through the multitude of other interests which they pursue.

We adopt a Senior School model of teaching in our Prep, where pupils have a form tutor, who is responsible for pastoral care, and then pupils are taught by subject specialists across the board.

The children continue to make use of the art studio and music room, and from Year 3 upwards they also have their science lessons in our fully equipped Science lab.

Our aim is to broaden children’s horizons and develop their critical thinking skills. We offer them opportunities for personal growth and leadership development, encouraging them to find and follow their passions.

The considered use of technology, combined with the best mix of traditional and innovative teaching methods, underpins an approach which drives accelerated progress.

PREP CURRICULUM

A broader curriculum, delivered by subject specialist teachers

Year 3 is the start our of Prep school, when pupils at Hendon Prep transition from the National Curriculum to the more challenging ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) curriculum for the core subjects of English, Maths and Science.

By starting the ISEB curriculum as early as Year 3, at Hendon Prep we build gradually towards our end goals, preparing our pupils so that they feel confident to meet the challenges of the 11+ process.

This broader curriculum, which is delivered by subject specialist teachers has been devised to stimulate and challenge pupils. It gives pupils the confidence they need to begin to question and inquire for themselves and become critical thinkers.

PSHE lessons provide an opportunity for pupils to explore their growing level of responsibility, whilst feeling supported by the guidance and encouragement of their teachers.

Drama is added to the timetable to develop confidence as children work towards interview practice in Year 6.

To broaden our children’s horizons and enable them to find and follow a passion beyond the standard curriculum, our unique Enrichment Programme offers a timetabled carousel of activities for children to choose from. Activities change each term but have included British Sign Language, Sports Journalism, Yoga, Classics and so much more.

Friday afternoons are devoted to sport for our Prep pupils when they take part in a wide variety of sporting activities. This includes rounders, athletics, tag rugby, hockey, football and cricket, depending upon the season. Prep pupils will also swim for one term per year and have a weekly PE session.

11+ Preparation

Our 11+ preparation programme is designed to meet the challenges of entrance examinations

The preparation towards 11+ at Hendon Prep is not limited to 2 year cramming, but scaffolded from Year 1. We place our knowledge of each individual child and family at the heart of the process, to reduce stress around this important time.

The children are taught to use and apply their knowledge in both exam papers and interviews. Their exam technique has been developed throughout their time in our Prep school with termly ISEB Assessments from Year 3 in the core subjects. This is in addition to a range of online annual assessments, so that they feel confident and well prepared.

PREP EXTRA-CURRICULAR

A dynamic programme of extra-curricular activities to broaden experiences

We offer a dynamic programme of extra-curricular activities as part of our commitment to extend and broaden our children’s experience at Hendon Prep.

Children are actively encouraged to join these programmes which run after school from 4pm until 5pm.

Afterschool clubs run by our teachers are included in your child’s school fees, however we also offer a number of additional clubs run by specialist providers, which incur a small termly fee.

Give your child the best possible start

Our children learn in an environment where they feel represented and included. Our broad and creative curriculum challenges pupils to think critically, develop curiosity, confidence, and independence, ensuring that they are prepared for whatever they encounter, in school and beyond.
