HOW WE TEACH

We offer a stimulating and exciting curriculum in well-resourced classrooms

Lessons focus on personalised learning and are taught in small groups and delivered by subject specialists who have the direct responsibility for the teaching and learning of all children in their care.

Teaching is creative and imaginative and we set high academic expectations for all our pupils, not-withstanding that we are academically non-selective. We are experienced in planning and preparing our children for the 11+ transition to some of the most selective senior schools.

We go beyond timetabling for core subjects by also adding enrichment programmes without sacrificing academic excellence in English, Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Our talented and innovative teachers challenge pupils on a daily basis, building confidence and curiosity helping them to develop a life-long love of learning.

11+ Preparation

Our 11+ preparation programme is well established to meet the challenges of 11+ entrance examinations

The preparation towards 11+ at Hendon Prep is not limited to 2 year cramming, but scaffolded from Year 1, placing our knowledge of each individual child and family at the heart of the process, and reducing the need for stress, supporting well-being.

The children are taught to use and apply their knowledge in both exam papers and interviews and their exam technique has been developed throughout their time in our Prep school with termly ISEB Assessments from Year 3 in the core subjects, as well as a range of online annual assessments, so that they feel confident and well prepared.

Ed Tech

Supporting a digital learning journey

We have a balanced approach to technology here at Hendon Prep, using it to supplement and extend traditional teaching methods but always with an eye on children’s ‘screen time’ and supported with lessons on internet safety.

Technology allows us to deliver great teaching and learning but as a platform for collaboration and productivity. We have witnessed first-hand the positive impact it can have, putting students at the heart of their learning by increasing engagement, developing intrinsic interpersonal skills, and preparing them for the future of adult life.

We use a variety of platforms and resources to support the learning and educational experience of our children, including Learning by Questions, Century Tech, Firefly and Microsoft Teams.

All our classrooms now have interactive whiteboards which are used by even the youngest members of our school in the Preschool class. Children from Preschool to Year 2 also use school iPads on a regular basis.

1:1 Digital Devices

We have also taken the next step in our digital learning journey by providing students in Year 3 and above with a laptop.

We believe that 1:1 devices are powerful tools that augment and transform the learning experience while offering the best possible resilience against any disruption to students’ educations. They will be used in balance with other teaching methodologies and woven into lessons in a planned and meaningful way to support the learning outcomes.

Thanks to our impressively high teaching standards we see our students excel across all core subjects, plus sports and creative and performing arts.

Our success is boosted by a robust process for tracking student attainment (ensuring we have a detailed record of every child’s progress), plus simple measures such as maintaining an open dialogue with parents so that we can address any areas where children need more support.

For students who are excelling in specific subjects, we are ready to challenge them and provide the support they need to take their learning above and beyond.
