Year 1
In Year 1 the teaching of phonics continues to build up confidence with reading and spelling. The introduction of simple punctuation and handwriting lessons allows the children to increase their written fluency. Mental maths, an important strand in our school-wide strategy, is introduced. Simple arithmetic continues through a variety of different activities, including number fans, in short, whole-class sessions.
Sequencing and learning to tell the time are commenced. Science topics include learning how animals move and grow, light and dark, and the sources of sound. Investigations in geography include exploring the local environment and aspects of the weather, whilst history comes alive with toys and homes of the past.
Great emphasis continues to be placed on supporting social and emotional development. The softer skills of learning to cooperate and be respectful to others, as well as being diligent and taking pride in one's work, are greatly encouraged.
