Year 4 - Curriculum
Curriculum
In Mathematics we build upon the previous year’s work with the lessons following a similar structure as in the previous year. During the autumn term a large emphasis is placed upon the four rules of number and applying these skills to mental arithmetic and written word problems. The children should be revising their times tables every day. As well as the four rules of number the children will be introduced to a variety of different mathematical concepts which include measuring, fractions, decimals, time, handling data, shape and space, money and 'real life' problems, reasoning about numbers and checking results. These concepts will be re-visited every term, each time building on existing knowledge to widen their knowledge and understanding.
Within the English curriculum there is constant graded development of their grammar, reading, comprehension skills, spelling, creative writing, listening skills and handwriting. An emphasis will be placed on the presentation of their work, and to help with this, handwriting lessons will be carried out regularly. The importance of daily reading cannot be understated.
Six scientific topics will be studied throughout Year 4, one every half term: Materials, Keeping Warm, Circuit and Conductors, Force and Friction, Habitat and Moving and Growing. Scientific experiments will be carried out when suitable and the children will learn how to use and select appropriate equipment. The pupils also visit the London Zoo to further develop their knowledge on animals’ habitat.
In History we cover Victorian Britain, Britain since the 1930s and World War II; the focus being on how the children were affected in these periods. The pupils are taken on two trips in the year to experience life as a Victorian child and as a World War II evacuee.
In Geography we cover map work, village settlers, life in an India village, our environment as well as rainforests. The children get to go on a mini-orienteering trip to further develop and put into practice their map work skills.
In Religious Studies, Year 4 covers the other three main religions not covered in Year 3: Judaism, Islam and Sikhism. Each term the pupils visit the religious place of worship being studied.
Others subjects such as ICT, Art, French and Music are taught by our specialist teachers.
