As the children move into Year 1 a more formal style of learning is introduced. There is a focus on subject-based learning that includes cross-curricular activities and the children are encouraged to be increasingly independent. Numeracy and literacy skills form the bedrock of our teaching as it is through these areas that the children can then access the broad and wide-ranging curriculum on offer. The children will also study Science, History, Geography, RE, PE and PHSE and they continue to benefit from subject specialist teaching in Art and DT, Music, IT and French.
Ongoing assessment takes place regularly making sure that the children are challenged and stretched whilst supported when needed.
As the children enter Year 2 many subjects continue to be cross-curricular. Literacy studies see the development of creative writing, maximising the pupils’ growing written vocabulary and they continue to enjoy solving real-life maths problems applying what they have learnt and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding.
All the children in Years 1 & 2 will swim and attend The Hendon Youth Centre Gym as part of the PE curriculum.
There are regular assemblies where the children’s efforts and achievements are celebrated.
