As the children move into Year 1 a more formal style of learning is introduced. Year 1 pupils follow the National Curriculum however, here at Hendon Prep, we encourage children to go beyond expectations with most working between 12 and 18 months ahead.
There is a focus on subject-based learning that includes cross-curricular activities and the children are encouraged to be increasingly independent. Numeracy and literacy skills form the bedrock of our teaching as it is through these areas that the children can then access the broad and wide-ranging curriculum on offer. The children will also study Science, History, Geography, RE, PE and PHSE and they continue to benefit from subject specialist teaching in Art and DT, Music, IT and French and from Year 1 we also introduce Spanish to the curriculum, again taught by a subject specialist.
Ongoing assessment takes place regularly making sure that the children are challenged and stretched whilst supported when needed.
All the children in Year 1 will swim and attend The Hendon Youth Centre Gym as part of the PE curriculum.
There are regular assemblies where the children’s efforts and achievements are celebrated.
